How to use a Woodworking Divider

Dividers may not be the most glamorous tool, but these simple little tools bring a lot to the table. For layout, stepping off distances, and comparing gaps and openings, they save time and increase accuracy, and that’s a combination that can’t be beat.

The Two Types of Dividers

Spring Dividers. This type of divider features a "C-Shaped" center that has two bars of iron that have been hinged together and riveted. These feature a speednut that increases or decreases the span of the divider. When you are looking to make small adjustments you can do small rotations on the speednut to your desire measurement. Here at ALLY Tools we have the 8 inch Spring Divider with Pencil Holder

Wing dividers. This type of divider has a wing nut that you simply loosen the nut and one leg swings free. This is excellent for big measurements as you can quickly change between two drasticaly different measurements by unlocking the wing nut. Here at ALLY Tools and Parts we have two version of wing dividers. We have the 12 inch Wing Divider with Pencil Holder and the 8 inch Wing Divider with Pencil Holder

Repeat Measurements

Dividers are easy to adjust, so you won’t be wasting time with a calculator, scratch paper, counting off tiny increments on a ruler.

A super-accurate way to divide a board into equal segments is to use a pair of dividers. Adjust the span of the dividers until you can walk the dividers across the board and the points fall on each edge. The same technique can be used to divide a circle or arc into equal segments.

When working with multiple identical parts, you can easily transfer your layout from one to the others – simply align the divider edges and carry the line(s) across with a square. Often, it is helpful to clamp the parts together to prevent them from shifting.
